Ginger Tea

Ginger-Coriander Herbal Drink – A Warming Elixir from the Ancients

Rooted in traditional Tamil wisdom, this herbal drink is a simple yet powerful home remedy for boosting digestion, easing colds, and warming the body from within. Made with just a few pantry staples—ginger, coriander seeds, cumin, and palm sugar—this blend is often prepared in Siddha households as a natural tonic, especially during the monsoon or when you’re feeling a little under the weather.

This isn’t your average tea—it’s a balancing, fire-free brew full of spice and sweetness, with each sip offering comfort and healing.

Ingredients (by parts):

  • Ginger – 1 part

  • Coriander seeds – 1.5 parts

  • Cumin seeds – 1.5 parts

  • Palm sugar – 2 parts

  • Water – as needed (typically about 2 to 3 cups depending on serving size)

Method:

  1. Peel and chop the ginger, then pound it along with the coriander seeds and cumin seeds using a mortar and pestle (or a spice grinder, if preferred).

  2. Transfer the ground mixture to a saucepan.

  3. Add palm sugar and enough water (about 2–3 cups) to make a light decoction.

  4. Boil the mixture until the water reduces to three-fourths of its original volume.

  5. Strain the liquid and serve warm.

  6. A Cup of Warmth, A Sip of Relief

This drink is soothing, aromatic, and naturally sweet, with the heat of ginger, the earthy spice of cumin, and the cooling touch of coriander, all balanced by the deep, caramel flavour of palm sugar. Ideal as a post-meal digestive or a gentle daily tonic, it’s one of those age-old recipes that require no reinvention—just respect and regular use.

Perfect for cold mornings, sluggish evenings, or anytime your body needs a little extra care—served straight from my grandmother’s wisdom.
