Pidiputtu: A Taste of Childhood and Togetherness
Recently, my husband shared a precious childhood memory that instantly warmed my heart — the way his mum used to make pidiputtu, a humble yet comforting steamed rice flour snack from their Ceylonese roots. Though I had never tasted pidiputtu myself, this story felt like a bridge connecting his past to our present.
Inspired by his vivid recollections, I made the dough in my kitchen, and together we shaped each little pidiputtu by hand — a simple act that turned into a beautiful moment of togetherness. It’s amazing how food has a way of weaving memories into the present, creating new stories while honoring old traditions.
Ingredients:
Roasted Red Rice Flour-3 cups
Hot Water- 1 cup or enough to moisten the flour
A pinch of Salt
Grated coconut- half a cup
Palm sugar ( I used muscavado brown sugar)
Method:
1. Add salt to the rice flour , mix with your hand.
2. Add boiling hot water little by little while mixing it in to the flour, enough to make the flour to a breadcrumbs consistency.
3. Mix in grated coconut and brown sugar. Mix it to the crumb like flour.
4. Take a handful of the mixture and close your fist, the mixture will form to it's shape (pidi means hold)
5. Steam for 5 minutes.
Makes about 10 to 15 pieces of pidiputtu.
A Simple Snack, A Shared Memory
From his childhood kitchen to ours, pidiputtu reminds me how food connects generations — not just through taste, but through love and shared moments. Every bite carries the sweetness of memory and the joy of making something together.
So next time you shape these crumbly balls and steam them to perfection, remember: you’re not just making a snack, you’re making history.
